Motorbikes today are one of the most widely used transportation equipment in the world. From year to year, motorcycles continue to experience development both in terms of the form and technology used. In history, there were several figures who were recognized as inventors of motorbikes. But keep in mind that the early forms of motorbikes were first introduced in Europe around the 19th century.

The History of Motorcycles, From Sylvester Howard Rover, Ernest Michaux, Lucius Copeland to Gottlieb Daimler

Sylvester H. Roper Steam Powered Motorbike

Regarding the history of motorcycle discovery, at first, an American man named Sylvester Howard Roper invented a two-cylinder engine that uses steam and installed it on a bicycle.

This theme is considered as the emergence of the world’s first engine-based bicycle. He also found a steam engine car, but Roper himself was killed when he was riding his first steam-powered motorcycle.

In another place in France, a man named Ernest Michaux tried to put a steam engine on his bicycle. The machine was made by his father who worked as a blacksmith. The engine is fueled by alcohol and uses twin drive belts to drive the front wheels of the bike.

A few years later, in 1881, American Lucius Copeland made a steam boiler that was smaller and taped to his bicycle. This steam boiler can move the rear wheel of his bike. The speed produced on his bicycle was extraordinary when it reached around 19 kilometers per hour. Finally, in 1887, Copeland made a manufacturing company that made a motorcycle.

Gottlieb Daimler and the World’s First Gasoline Motorbike.

Gottlieb Daimler

After that, the next 10 years, a variety of motorcycle designs appeared. But then the motorcycle findings of Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach from Germany were widely recognized as the world’s first Motorcycle.

Daimler’s motorbike uses a gasoline-fueled internal combustion engine made in 1885 called Petroleum Reitwagon. Gottlieb Daimler was recognized worldwide as the inventor of a motorcycle.

Gottlieb Daimler’s motorcycle uses the engine Nicolaus Otto, known as the 4-stroke engine in 1876. After Nicolaus Otto finished the engine, Gottlieb Daimler, who was once an Otto employee developing it into a new engine, also forgot to create the first carburetor in world.

Wilhelm Maybach then put the machine and the carburetor on the Daimler bicycle and became a motorcycle. Uniquely, Daimler and Maybach’s Petroleum Reitwagon motorbikes have a pair of wheels in the middle similar to a safety wheel and keep the bike upright beside the two front and rear wheels. Gottlieb Daimler is known as an outstanding innovator.

First Motorcycle Design by Gottlieb Daimler

Apart from finding cars and motorbikes and also creating carburetors, he was also a pioneer in the manufacture of commercial car arenas, he also created engines for ships with gasoline fuel.

His company later named Daimler-Benz a leading automotive company then developed into the Mercedes-Benz that we know today.

Since then, many companies have sprung up introducing engine-driven bicycles which became known as Motorbikes. Which was initially widely known in Germany then to England and spread rapidly to America.

The Hildebrand & Wolfmüller company became the first company to set up a factory for the production of motorcycle vehicles, then in America, the company named Charles Metz first set up a factory to produce motorbikes in the Waltham area, Massachusetts.

Motorcycle Development in America

In America alone, there are many motorcycle designers, but one of the most famous pioneers in this field is William Harley and Artur and Walter Davidson brothers who later founded an automotive company known as Harley-Davidson.

William Harley and the Davidson brothers founded the Harley-Davidson Motor Company in 1903. Their motorbikes had quality machines.
